100 Blocks Blog Tour!

Welcome to Applewood Farm. It's so nice to see so many new faces here! It's my turn today to crow about having a block in Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks series. (Check in with Quiltmaker to see all the cool designers taking part in this year's blog tour.)

This is my fourth time to have a block included, and it's still an ego rush to be part of the magazine. My name is on the cover this time, too. Double cool.

I'm amazed at the originality with these blocks. Some are lovely, some are graphic, some are silly, and others are just plain cool. Every issue contains interesting and appealing blocks, which tells me that quilters still have lots to say!

This time it's Little Red Posies from me. I love the polka dots, they are just so happy. For applique artists, perfect circles are just plain showing off. But with three simple ingredients, perfect circles are easy to achieve.

Gather up a glue stick, a circle punch (it pays to haunt scrapbooking stores), and a sheet of Wash Away Applique Paper. Well, and some fabric would come in handy about now. The circle punches come in all sorts of sizes from teeny-tiny to honkin' big. I find that I use the 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch sizes the most frequently. The Wash Away paper punches most cleanly through two layers at a time.

Press the shiny side of the Wash Away paper to the wrong side of the fabric. The smaller the circle, the narrower the seam allowance needs to be. A heaping eighth inch is all we need for half inch circles, a scant quarter inch will make three-quarter inch circles a snap.  Use the glue stick to turn the seam allowance, voila! perfect circles!

Here are just a couple of layout suggestions for our Little Red Posies. Two blocks together make a darling table runner or wall hanging.

I totally am going to make this. Cut the green border strips at 2 1/2", we can get all four borders out of two strips, cutting a 12 1/2" segment and a 28 1/2" segment from each strip. I cut my bindings at 1 3/4" to 2" wide, we'll need two to three strips for the bindings. Cut the bias stem strips just a couple of inches longer to span from one block to the next to complete the inner circle. Shazam!

Isn't this darling? Just four blocks, rotated around the center and it's a nifty little wall hanging or maybe a doll quilt.

This is where I tell you to leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of the latest issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks.  Since I'm feeling all Christmasy, how about you share your holiday sewing plans?

  1. We spend our Christmas holidays with parents and I hope it will be enough snow for cross country skiing.

  2. I haven't gotten much done yet, and I broke my ankle on Saturday. I suspect this will be a pretty quiet holiday season. I may make a bunch of mug rugs--can't imagine not quilting at Christmas.

  3. Sweet block ... I like both versions.
My intentions for Christmas sewing is to attack my UFO pile and work on at least 1 wedding quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm making my grandson fabric storage roll-ups that his Matchbox cars & trucks will fit into. So far I've made four using tractor fabric, each roll-up has ten slots.

  6. I'm finished - yes, said it. But those scraps said use me - so making a few candle mats to have on hand should I need a little 'unexpected' something.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I've pretty much wrapped up my holiday sewing. For the adults, I made candle mats this year which I'll wrap with a dish and candles. For the young ones, I made pillowcases, which will be accompanied with a story book - age appropriate, of course.

  38. I'm in the midst of a Christmas quilt made with a Winter Elegance layer cake for my living room. It is a quick quilt but packs a big punch because I left most of the 10x10 squares whole. I'm waiting for borders to arrive in the mail. In the meantime, I have begun a Redwork Santa to be a little mini quilt in another room and I also am stitching the Crabapple Hill pattern, Over the River. Better get off this computer!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have been working on door hangers and table toppers for Christmas. I love your block. I have taken a class from you and love your techniques. Thank you for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Great tutorial on your block! I have lots of "quilty" plans....the key word here is "plans". A quick Christmas quilt for son & wife, new stockings for the grands, new table topper & tree skirt for us. And maybe a new throw for the couch. If time runs out...the stuff for us will take backseat. Oh, and I'm making fabric cover ornaments to have on hand when visitors stop by. I put them in a basket and everyone can select one as a small gift.

  41. I am making runners for family this xmas. Congrats on getting your block in the magazine! Love your block!

  42. I NEED to get started on a lap quilt in beautiful blues for my Mother-in-law!! 2 days later, my grandson turns 3 & I will make him a bed pillow backed by special "3" fabric. Gotta get busy! Thanks for the block. I love how 2 of them work into that adorable table runner.

  43. Little Red Posies would make a great Christmas block. I'm looking forward to using my fabric stash in Christmas prints to make a wall hanging or two.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I feel in the giving spirit this year so I am going to be making a couple quilts for donation for Help for Sandy Survivors! At least I hope I am able to make a couple. You block is adorable. 46. We are house moving this weekend, so I move my sewing machine with me in the car, so I know where it is exactly, to start curtains etc. If not, it would be til Christmas before I'd locate it. Have two Christmas stockings on the docket so far. After all the moving hub-bub, Christmas season will seem sloooow!Congrats on your block. You can't help but smile looking at it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This Christmas I am hand quilting a lap quilt for my father, I am making a pillow case for my nephew and pj pants for my niece. I also hope to finish a wall hanging for my mother in law.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I usually start my Christmas sewing in May --- am a bit behind this year. Have matching nitegowns for granddaughters with their dolls, pillowcases for the boys and satin pillowcases for the adults. A couple of tablerunners are on the horizon --- at least the fabric is ready. Always plan too much with too little time --- it's the Season.

  49. I'm still working on 12 veterans quilts, 3 baby quilts and a wedding quilt. If I get these done before Christmas, I'll be happy and so will the recipients.

  50. Hi Beth - love the block!
My holiday sewing plans? Well, I decided that since my kids will all be home for Thanksgiving but not Christmas, we are going to celebrate this year by having them help (torturing them?) set up the tree, decorate it, figuring out whose ornaments are whose since they are all grown and could use them for their own trees, etc.
So any holiday sewing for me will be for me! Plans are to try to redo the sewing room and work on some ufos, maybe some mysteries coming up...and I'm sure I'll be trying out your new block!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I need to finish a wall hanging that I started last year after Christmas - it's a tree made with Rose of Sharon cutouts, and most of the fabrics are glittery.
    thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have a Christmas UFO that I've started working on again. Hopefully, this will be the year to finish it.

What I really end up doing remains to be seen!

I have a quilt I'd like to get done (read that as get started) for my husband and would love to get a quilt made for each of my Grandchilren as well. If I get that done it will be a miracle but that's what I'm hoping for.

I was going to make handmade Christmas presents this year, but I seem to be in a crafting slump. Nothing peaks my interest right now - not sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc. I'm hoping this funk breaks soon.

I had two boys and this is our first grandchild. All the fabric I buy now would make a cute dress or a great quilt. Happy sewing.
